Djordje Mihailovic forces Rapids FO to trade him to Toronto FC, leaving the team high and dry in the midfield with just two weeks left in the transfer window.
Well said, Rabbi. Beyond the moves that other clubs are making, the lack of training facilities also bears a lot of fault here. You don't even have to go across the pond to see the difference in quality. Just look at the teams who do have ambition and how they run their clubs. The club can't get by with an apartment gym in the bowels of DSGP. As the league grows, so too are the profile of players coming in and if they see such a difference in quality when it comes to facilities within the own league it's no wonder players here force moves elsewhere. So long as the club ethos is set by a billionaire owner much more invested in Californian land development, this will always be Rapids fans lot in life; Under or over performing GM be damned.
I was shocked when I heard this move was done. Have you heard any rumors of any replacements that the Rapids may be looking into? Also, big picture, have you heard anything about the possibilities that Stan Kroenke might sell the team. It’s obvious the Rapids are not a priority for him.
Hard to replace a DP #10. Very hard. In the near term, I expect nothing. Probably an attempt to find a replacement in Winter.
Re: KSE sale. I’ve never heard any interest in moving the team. That said, Josh Kroenke has almost never spoken to media at all, let alone about the Rapids. He never attends games. It’s just an asset to him. The Rapids are like a rare coin in a safe deposit box. Bought it; forgot it.
Possible. I'm not a tax attorney. However, the operating revenues vs expenditures aren't that far out of whack, so if it's a write off, it's like $1-3 million against Kroenke's assets, which are in the tens of billions; which means he'd be intentionally underfunding the team for maybe a 0.1% gain.
More likely, as my running theory has been going, the Rapids are an asset that, because of the growth of MLS and expansion fees, has grown and grown in value. You operate it near in the black, meaning spend as little as possible, and yet it still grows by 15% to 40% each year. Amazing returns. This is like owning an apartment building that keeps becoming more valuable. You don't bother redoing the bathroom or paving the driveway because who cares. When you sell it, you'll be a bazillionaire.
You’re right, MLS’s transfer window closes on August 21st which does not give them much time. When you think about it, why does it close on the 21st when the European leagues close on September 1st. That really handicaps the teams in MLS.
